Description: | From Oldtown Summer Fest Website: Oldtown was settled in 1741 by Colonel Thomas Cresap, pathfinder, patriot and frontiersman of what was then a wilderness. Cresap entertained George Washington when the young George was in Oldtown as a surveyor apprentice. They became lifelong friends, and George Washington visited Oldtown throughout his life. Thomas Cresap was active in fur trading, the French & Indian War, and was famous for his dispute against Pennsylvania over the 40th Parallel which was eventually surveyed by Mason and Dixon. The Michael Cresap Museum, home of Captain Michael Cresap, is the centerpiece of the town. Michael was the youngest son of Thomas, and was famous for skills for the longrifle, and for being the Captain of the first southern militia to answer George Washington's call to arms in Cambridge.
