Description: | From North American Sea Glass Festival Website: At this year's North American Sea Glass Festival in Ocean City, MD, you can expect the unexpected. A mix of collectors, artists, novices, authors, exhibitors, and speakers will come together to celebrate the mysterious fragments of glass and pottery that wash up on shorelines around the world--fragments appreciated for their individual beauty and clues to their origins.
This 10th anniversary festival was built on a modest 2006 gathering of 200 beachcombers in Rockport, MA. Last year's festival in Cape May, NJ drew a crowd of 5,000, which reflects the growing interest in these rapidly diminishing artifacts.
The featured event, the Shard of the Year Contest, draws hundreds of contenders for the $1,000 first prize. The contest will be held on Sunday at the festival. Additional winners in up to ten possible subcategories: Runner-up, Pottery/Ceramics, Whimsical/Toys, Bottle Stoppers, Most Unusual, Historical, Art Glass, Marbles, Buttons, and Figural win $100 each.
Most of all, private collectors, vendors, and specialists come to the festival to share their passion for sea glass.
As always, a portion of the North American Sea Glass Festival proceeds will benefit regional and national efforts at shoreline conservation, preservation, and beautification.
