Description:

From Carroll County Farmers Market Spring Fling Website:

The Carroll County Farmer's market is the oldest farmers market in Carroll County and the second oldest in the state of Maryland. The Market began in July of 1972 with the help of county Extension agent, Robert L. Jones, as an outlet for local farmers to sell their products and to give local consumers a chance to buy farm fresh produce, eggs, baked goods, jams and jellies, agricultural products and handmade crafts.

There were only 23 stalls set up the first summer with plans for two Christmas Market dates that year as well. Originally only Carroll County growers and residents were allowed to participate. That changed in 1981 due to bad drought conditions the previous year, which caused a serious lack of produce. Vendors from surrounding counties were then invited to participate.

Demonstrations were scheduled on food preparation and crafts each week. These were done by homemaker groups, 4-H and Church groups who were involved with the market. Early demos included canning and freezing foods, broom making, dried flowers and herbs.

After 40 years the Farmer's Market has seen many changes and much growth. There are several vendors and many customers who have been here since the beginning. The primary goal of providing high quality produce and homemade products is still the guiding principle of the market.

The Market now has 65-100 vendors participating each week. The schedule has expanded to 3 Spring Markets, a Summer Market beginning the third Saturday in June and continuing through the first Saturday in September, and a seven week Christmas market starting the first Saturday in November.

Special events during the Summer Market include Christmas in July, Peach Festival, Heirloom Tomato festival and other promotions.

Home grown fruits, vegetables and fresh flowers are at the market in season. Home baked cakes, pies, bread, candy, jams and jellies, gourmet foods, honey, fresh eggs, emu products, farm raised beef, pork, and lamb can be found each week. Customers can also find garden plants and the Carroll County Master Gardeners.
